چکیده

The optical Faraday effect describes the rotation of linear polarization upon propagation through a medium in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field. The effect arises from a different phase delay between the right and left handed polarization components of the light. In this paper we predict a Faraday effect for a completely different system: electron vortices. Free electron vortex states were recently observed in transmission electron microscopy experiments, and they introduce new degrees of freedom into the probing of matter with electron beams. We associate a rotation of a vortex superposition with the fact that different phases are acquired by oppositely handed vortices propagating in a magnetic field. We show that, in contrast to the optical Faraday effect, the rotation of the electron beam occurs in vacuum and arises from the intrinsic chirality of the constituent vortex states. 1 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Transfer of Polarized Radiation in Strongly Magnetized Plasmas and Thermal Emission from Magnetars: Effect of Vacuum Polarization

We present a theoretical study of radiative transfer in strongly magnetized electron-ion plasmas, focusing on the effect of vacuum polarization due to quantum electrodynamics. This study is directly relevant to thermal radiation from the surfaces of highly magnetized neutron stars, which have been detected in recent years. Strong-field vacuum polarization modifies the photon propagation modes i...

Inverse Cotton-Mouton effect of the Vacuum and of atomic systems

In this letter we calculate the Inverse Cotton-Mouton Effect (ICME) for the vacuum following the predictions of Quantum ElectroDynamics. We compare the value of this effect for the vacuum with the one expected for atomic systems. We finally show that ICME could be measured for the first time for noble gases using state-of-the-art laser systems and for the quantum vacuum with near-future laser f...

Far-infrared cyclotron resonance and Faraday effect in Bi2Se3

The complex Faraday angle and transmission for the topological insulator Bi2Se3 were measured in the far infrared in magnetic fields up to 8 T and analyzed in terms of a simple Drude-Lorentz magnetoplasma dielectric model. Bulk carriers dominate the optical response. The bulk carriers are electrons as we determined from the sign of the Faraday angle. We obtain the bulk band-edge cyclotron mass ...

The detection of circular polarization in compact synchrotron sources provides new insights into magnetic field configurations and the low-energy population of electrons in relativistic jets. Conversion of linear to circular polarization can be stimulated by Faraday rotation or turbulence in the source itself. Electron Singularities, Matter Wave Catastrophes, and Vortex Lattice Singularimetry

Singularities in wave fields, such as phase vortices, are of substantial interest for light optics, matter waves and x-ray optics. New theoretical insights [1] and cutting edge nanofabrication techniques have recently created a wide variety of electron vortex beams [2, 3] for the transmission electron microscope (TEM), which can provide spectroscopic information pertaining to the magnetic prope...
